BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werken AG - one of the leaders in the premium car market, acknowledged for its performance, power and design. It is the 14th largest manufacturer of cars and LCVs in the world (OICA, 2009). Currently, the company owns and produces automobiles under the brands BMW and Mini. It is the parent company of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and produces motorcycles under the Husqvarna and BMW Motorrad brands. The company's brands cover all market sectors from exclusive smaller cars to top-of-the-range luxury limousines. BMW is the epitome of "sheer driving pleasure", behind which stand high quality products and services as well as premium standards and performance. The company's logo is a black circumference with text BMW, which encloses a blue and white circle. Some interpretations state that the blue and white depict an aircraft's propeller cutting through the blue sky. Other interpretations argue that it is meant to show the colors of the Free State of Bavaria. BMW is established in 1916 in Germany. In its early years it has been concentrated on producing air-crafts and engines. Production of motorcycles has been employed in 1923 and production of cars - in 1928-29. The company has established itself as a leading car manufacturer with its New Class line, which was launched in 1962 and maintained till 1977. This is a series of compact coupes and sedans, including two-door sports sedans, equipped with the much praised four-cylinder M10 engine of BMW, fully independent suspension, front disk brakes, MacPerson struts in front. It is precisely the sporty variations of the New Class series (the predecessors of the present 3 Series) that established BMW as a premier car manufacturer on worldwide basis. At present some of the most noteworthy BMW series are the 1 Series (the smallest BMW cars, which come as hatchbacks, convertibles or coupes), the 3 Series (sedans, coupes, convertibles, wagons), the 5 Series (progressive activity sedans), the 6 Series (coupes and convertibles), the 7 Series (sedans), the X Series with X1, X3 and X5 being compact crossover SUVs/SAVs, while the X6 comes as a sports activity coupe. The much praised M Series are sporty versions of the already well-known series, especially the M3, which is a race-ready production vehicle that comes as a sedan, coupe, wagon or convertible. The M5 comes in sedans and wagons, the M6 - in convertibles and sedans, the X5 M and X6 M are SAVs. In the roadster and and two-seater coupe segments Z3 and later Z4 are the flagship vehicles. Below are listed different BMW models, for which are provided detailed technical specifications.
