Peugeot is one of the most famous French car brands. It is part of the PSA Peugeot Citroën group, which is the second largest car manufacturer in Europe and the sixth largest in the world (OICA, 2009). The Peugeot family had a diverse business established in 1810 and the lion trademark was reserved in 1858. It entered the car business in 1889 and produced its first automobile. In 1890 under the license of Daimler Peugeot produced a rather sophisticated car compared to its contemporaries. During the following years car production gradually increased with the models bearing a "Type number" name - a nomenclature started in 1895. In that period Peugeot became the first manufacturer to put rubber tires on a petrol-powered car. It was also one of the pioneers of motor racing. In 1896 the company started producing its own engines and was no longer dependent on Daimler. The two-cylinder Bébé model, which became a style leader, was first introduced in 1901. By 1903 the company produced 50% of the cars in France. In the following years the company continued expanding and launching new models with various engines. In 1912 was introduced the new four-cylinder Bébé designed by Ettore Bugatti. It was in 1929 that the new nomenclature was launched with the 201 model - the cheapest car on the French market. The three digits with a zero in the middle was registered as a trademark. Decades later, when Porsche wanted to launch a 901 model, it couldn't because Peugeot had it as a registered trademark, so Porsche renamed its model to 911. In 1934 the company launched the first convertible with a retractable hardtop - the 402 BL Éclipse Décapotable. In 1947 was introduced the hugely successful 203 model, which remained in production till 1960. Another market hit was the 403 model launched in 1955. It sold a million units till the end of its production in 1962. In 1976 Peugeot bought Citroën and in 1978 bought Chrysler Europe. The 205 model produced for the first time in 1983 was another major success for Peugeot, which also managed to help the company during a hard period. Some of the most noteworthy models of the company are the 504 from 1969, the 405 from 1988, the 406 from 1996, the 307 from 2002, the 206 from 1999. The current list of cars produced by Peugeot include the following models: 107 (saloons), 1007 (saloons), 207 (saloons, coupes/cabriolets, break-SW), 308 (saloons, coupes/cabriolets, break-SW), 3008, 407 (saloons, coupes/cabriolets, break-SW), 408, 508, 607, RCZ (coupes/cabriolets), Bipper, Partner and Expert (ludospace), 4007 (4x4 SUV), 5008 (MPVs), 807 (MPVs).
