Škoda, the short version of Škoda Auto, is a Czech Republic based car manufacturer, part of the Volkswagen Group - the third largest producer of cars and LCVs in the world (OICA, 2009). The history of the company began in 1895 when Václav Klement and Václav Laurin established in Mladá Boleslav a company for bicycles and motorcycles. Since than the company's main principle has been that only the best is good enough for its customers. Its first cars appeared in 1905. After WWI the company was bought out by Škoda Works - an arms manufacturer since 1859, which has turned into a huge industrial concern. One of its most successful models from that period is the late 1930s Škoda Popular. During WWII the company seized car production and became a part of the Hermann Göring Werke. After the war, the factory in Mladá Boleslav was reconstructed, the company was nationalized and car production was renewed starting with the 1101 series. Till the 1960s Škoda confirmed its reputation of quality and safety with models such as the 440 Spartak, 445 Octavia, Felicia and 1000 MB. During the 1970s and 1980s its cars still had that 1960s appearance but were very preferred including in Western Europe and the UK. The sports versions of Estelle, which was called Rapid, had huge success in sales in the UK. The Estelle, Rapid and Škoda 105/120 won their class in the RAC rally for 17 consecutive years. During the late 1980s, the company began closing the technology and design gap by introducing the Favorit model (1987) designed by the Italian designer company Bertone. The model was quite a success and continued to be improved and produced till 1994, when Felicia was introduced. During the huge privatization processes during the 1990s, the government chose Volkswagen Group to form a joint-venture, which gained 31% of Škoda in 1991. In 2000 Škoda became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Volkswagen Group. The group backed up Škoda with technical and design innovations and in 1994 was launched the Felicia - an improved version of the Favorit. The new generations of Octavia and Fabia boast new and more appealing design coupled with Volkswagen floorplans. Since that moment on Škoda's appeal has improved and the company has seen a steady growth in sales. The present portfolio of cars manufactured by Škoda includes the award-winning Yeti (compact SUVs), Superb (sedans/saloons), Roomster (MPVs), Praktik (panel vans), Octavia (liftbacks, station wagons), Fabia (hatchbacks, saloons, estates).
